The CUBE — not to be confused with that odd-looking vehicle from Nissan — will officially open today in Old Market Square, as the Exchange District BIZ unveils the area’s new stage.
A roster full of noon-hour concerts over the summer have already been booked full for performances on the stage all the way up to September. The Winnipeg Folk Festival, the Winnipeg Fringe Festival and Jazz Winnipeg will grace the new stage, and first-timers to Old Market Square, such as Folklorama, the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and the WSO’s Indigenous Music Festival will also take advantage of the new cultural amenity.
“We’re thrilled with how Old Market Square has been transformed over the past three years,” said Brian Timmerman, Executive Director of the Exchange District BIZ. “The stage’s new, unique design has created a lot of conversation, and the interactive light and sound capabilities of the CUBE have Winnipeggers intrigued. We can’t wait to show off the stage’s full potential — it will definitely have Winnipeggers and visitors buzzing.”
The event begins at 11 a.m. with greetings from the project’s partners, followed by a concert from noon to 1:30 p.m. A light and laser show will take place later in the evening at 10 p.m. to demonstrate the CUBE’s state-of-the-art light and sound capabilities.
