With star quarterback Buck Pierce out with a sprained knee, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers signed import QB Joey Elliott on Tuesday.
Elliott played four years with the Boilermakers primarily as a backup to Curtis Painter before taking over the starting job in his senior season. That year, Elliott completed 267 of 433 passes for 3,026 yards and 22 touchdowns against only 13 interceptions and had only one game where his quarterback rating was below 111.33. Elliott went undrafted in the 2010 NFL Draft but signed with the Philadelphia Eagles shortly after. He was released in June.
“We feel Joey is an athletic quarterback who is suited for the Canadian game,” Blue Bombers VP and GM of Football Operations Joe Mack said in a statement. “His addition will continue to strengthen our depth at the all important quarterback position.”
The Bombers host the Edmonton Eskimos on Saturday, July 24 at Canad Inns Stadium.
