Shortstop Wes Long is no longer a Winnipeg Goldeye after a transaction Friday saw his contract purchased by the Florida Marlins.

In a release, the Goldeyes said Long, 28, will join the Single-A Greensboro Grasshoppers.

Long leaves Winnipeg eighth in Northern League batting with a .323 average, which is second on the team. He has hit seven home runs and racked up 41 RBI in 69 games.

Long started 69 of Winnipeg’s 70 games this season at shortstop and was selected to the Northern League’s All-Star Team last month.

In another transaction, the team signed infielder Patrick Brooks from the Wichita Wingnuts of the American Association.

The 25-year-old hit .212 with Wichita in 19 games. He also had four doubles and six RBI.

The Goldeyes open up a 10-game homestand tonight against Kansas City T-Bones, who are here for three games at Canwest Park this weekend.
