If hanging out on the beach isn’t your thing while in cottage country, two new community recreation facilities will soon be part of the Victoria Beach and Grand Marais areas.

The provincial government is providing $490,000 to develop the facilities to encourage physical activity for families and cottagers living nearby.

Victoria Beach will receive $250,000 in provincial support, including $50,000 from the Community Places Program for the Alex Anderson Memorial Sports Club and Legion Hall, a new multi-purpose community centre. The project carries an estimated price tag of over $3 million, and involves construction of a multi-purpose hall, indoor curling rink, recreation offices, fitness centre and outdoor skating rink. Construction is expected to start in 2011.

The RM of St. Clements will receive $240,000 in provincial funding, including $40,000 to construct the new Grand Marais Heritage Centre. The centre will also serve as a tourism centre for visitors to the region. The total cost of the project is estimated at over $700,000.
