Two men are presumed drowned after a canoe was overtaken by high waves on Hughes Lake on Sunday.

RCMP were called to the scene at about 7 p.m., where they found two of the four people in the canoe, a 32-year-old man and 22-year-old woman, had made it safely to shore. Two other men, aged 43 and 34, didn’t make it back.

Witnesses report life jackets were not in use at the time.

Search efforts are underway, and the RCMP Underwater Recovery Team is expected to arrive this afternoon to assist in the search.

All four occupants in the boat are from Lynn Lake.

No names have been released.

UPDATE: Tuesday, August 17 — RCMP have located the bodies of the two missing men. No foul play is suspected.
