Over 100 runners and walkers are hitting the pavement this morning in the 2010 Athletics Manitoba Empower Run.

The 10 km championship run in Kildonan Park supports Siloam Mission, one of Winnipeg’s busiest inner-city homeless shelters.

The run begins at 9 a.m. at the park’s south picnic shelter, while the 3 km Youth Series fun run/walk starts at 9:05 a.m.

The run will also help select Athletics Manitoba’s Timex team heading to Toronto next month.

Six prizes of $100 based on random finishing times are up for grabs when the race concludes.

“It is a great opportunity for Winnipeggers to get some exercise with friends and family, as well as coming out to support a local cause,” said Rob Guy, managing director of Athletics Manitoba.

“We hope to raise significant funds for Siloam Mission and provide an event with lots of fun and prizes for everyone.”

Siloam Mission provides up to 900 meals every day to Winnipeg’s homeless community. Each week there’s an average of 230 visits to the clothing room, and approximately 360 health centre visits.
