Note to motorists: Avoid Assiniboine Avenue on Tuesday.
The city is closing down the street that’s been at the centre of controversy ever since construction of the new bike path began, causing traffic nightmares for many drivers.
The closure will be in effect September 28 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. as the city resurfaces sections of the roadway between the Midtown Bridge and Kennedy Street. Several roads will be temporarily closed or will be for local access only.
- Assiniboine Avenue will be closed to vehicle traffic between the Midtown Bridge and Osborne Street
- Kennedy Street will be completely closed to vehicle traffic between the back lane and Assiniboine Avenue
- Kennedy Street will be signed “Local Access Only” at Broadway and vehicles will be allowed to access this area only via the back lane adjacent to Broadway
- Edmonton Street between Assiniboine Avenue and Broadway will remain open; however, access to Edmonton Street from Assiniboine Avenue will not be allowed
- Carlton Street will be completely closed to vehicle traffic between the back lane and Assiniboine Avenue
- Carlton Street will be signed “Local Access Only” at Broadway and vehicles will be allowed to access this area only via the back lane adjacent to Broadway
- Hargrave Street will be closed between Hargrave Place and Assiniboine Avenue
- Access from Assiniboine Avenue to all north-south back lanes between Kennedy Street and Donald Street will not be allowed
Emergency vehicles will be allowed access at all times. Notice of the closure was communicated to area residents and businesses over the weekend.
The city is facing litigation from a group of business owners in the area who are seeking $1 million in compensation and an injunction for work on the street to stop. The matter is currently before the courts.
