A former defensive back with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers is making a return after an NFL tryout.

Jonathan Hefney signed with Winnipeg on May 28, 2009 and was last year’s Most Outstanding Rookie finalist before heading south.

The 24-year-old South Carolina native started his rookie season at halfback and made 66 tackles, four interceptions and five special teams tackles.

Hefney signed with the Detroit Lions in the offseason and was added to the team’s practice roster following two weeks in NFL training camp.

Prior to joining the Bombers last year, he had tryouts with both the Tamra Bay Buccaneers and Philadelphia Eagles.
