A program to encourage the recycling of plastic bags to be turned into Frisbees was launched on Monday.

Take Pride Winnipeg and Multi-Material Stewardship Manitoba joined students from Greenway School to kick off the month-long Plastic Bag Roundup Challenge.

Winnipeg-area elementary school students have been collecting the bags since 2008, but this year it was expanded to all Southern Manitoba schools, as well as schools in Thompson.

The 2010 goal is to collect one million plastic bags and involve 125 elementary schools. Take Pride Winnipeg will be tracking schools’ progress on their website at TakePride.mb.ca.
