To help fight hunger this Thanksgiving, Shaw TV Winnipeg is working to fill the city’s food banks with donations.
On Thursday, October 7, Shaw will go live with their Together is Amazing “THANKSGIVIN’R” Fill the Food Banks Telethon.
Community groups, sports teams, businesses and individuals are encouraged to hold mini-drives this week and then visit Shaw during 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. on the 7th to make their donation.
Shaw and Campbell Canada will match food donations with a combined goal of one million pounds of food across Canada. Some donations will even be weighed in live on the air.
If you can’t make it down to 22 Scurfield Boulevard, you can phone in a financial donation, which will go to Winnipeg Harvest. Every dollar Harvest receives is enough to provide $20 worth of food. Donations can also be made at every Safeway location in Winnipeg on the day of the telethon.
Local bands will perform at the telethon, including Sheena Grobb, Mac Kenzie Road, Scott Nolan, and Grey Man. Comedian Big Daddy Taz, actress Tina Keeper, Hot 103 morning show host Ace Burpee, Winnipeg Sun columnist Laurie Mustard, members of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, and mascots Buzz and Boomer will make appearances as well.
Winnipeg Harvest says this will be their largest Thanksgiving food drive in its 24-year history. “We want Manitobans to know that the challenge is to beat hunger,” said Executive Director David Northcott. “But our fight with poverty issues and social injustice is not going to end with a truce. As a community we still have many more daily battles ahead if we want to see all Manitobans with an equal opportunity to place enough nutritious groceries on the table.”
