Bisons Open Hockey Season to Face Alberta and Regina

October 6, 2010 6:29 AM | Sports

It’s hockey season at the University of Manitoba as the men’s and women’s teams take to the ice this weekend.

On Tuesday, both teams announced their captains for the 2010-11 season. Mike Hellyer was named as captain for the first time, along with forward alternates Nolan Walker, Riley Dudar and defenceman Dane Crowley.

The women named Amy Coates as captain, with forwards Addie Miles, Becca King and defenceman Kacey Funk serving as alternates.

The men have already had a few injuries to deal with in the last few weeks, including a few scuffs while facing the Manitoba Moose prospects team last week, where the Bisons lost 2-1.

Captain Mike Hellyer feels inexperience may be a drawback this season, but says the team can overcome it quickly by getting put into the swing of things.

The women face Alberta on Friday, October 8 at 4 p.m. and on Saturday, October 9 at 3 p.m. The men will take to the ice at 8 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, respectively to play Regina. All games are at the Max Bell Arena.
