Bisons Open Basketball Season Against Crosstown Rivals

October 21, 2010 7:24 AM | Sports

A rivalry between two Winnipeg universities will be settled on the basketball court on Friday as the Manitoba Bisons open up their 2010-11 season.

Both the Bison men and women’s teams will play the University of Winnipeg at the Investors Group Athletic Centre.

Eric Garcia is returning this year as captain of the men’s team, while guard Kayla Klassen and forwards Lauren Mortier and Mubo Illelaboye have been named women’s captains.

Garcia was third in team scoring with a 13.3 average, and fifth in Canada West with 4.3 assists per game. Head coach Kirby Schepp said Garcia lends a veteran presence to the team and has already shown the ability to lead as captain last season. “He will be a big part of the team throughout this season,” Schepp said.

Kayla Klassen finished tied for first on the team and 22nd in Canada West scoring with 12.1 points per game and currently sits 14th in 3-point shooting from the 2009-10 season. Both Mortier and Illelaboye are captains for the first time and bring a combined value of leadership to the team. “All three are committed to being leaders on and off the court,” said head coach Pam Danis.

The Bison women face the U of W Wesmen at 6 p.m., with the men’s game following at 8 p.m.
