A four-year-old girl has died and her mother is facing charges after an incident in Stuartburn, Manitoba last weekend.
RCMP say the child was rushed to Children’s Hospital in Winnipeg on Sunday and treated for injuries related to a severe assault. She later died in hospital.
The girl’s mother, 32-year-old Mary Joana Belanger, has been charged with second-degree murder.
Belanger’s other children, a 13-year-old girl and an 18-month-boy, are now in the care of Child and Family Services.
All are residents of Stuartburn, which is about 100 km south of Winnipeg.
Morris and Emerson RCMP are currently investigating, with the help of the Winnipeg Major Crime Services and Winnipeg Forensic Identification Section.
Belanger remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in Winnipeg court today.
