The Manitoba Theatre Centre received a royal designation Tuesday, attracting the attention of Queen Elizabeth II.

During a late afternoon reception at the Manitoba Legislature, attended by Premier Greg Selinger and Lt.-Gov. Philip Lee, MTC received the honour as the oldest English-speaking regional theatre in Canada.

Now called the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre, it operates the John Hirsch Theatre Mainstage and the Tom Hendry Theatre Warehouse, the Fringe and Playwrights festivals, and tours in rural and northern Manitoba.

RMTC’s co-founder Tom Hendry was also honoured by the designation.

“It’s a great recognition that the Manitoba Theatre Centre has done pretty well climbing a certain height of mountains,” said Hendry.
