Bisons Open Volleyball Season Against Wesmen Saturday

It’s volleyball time at the University of Manitoba, as both the men’s and women’s teams open up their 2010-11 season Saturday night against their crosstown rivals at the University of Winnipeg.

The Bison men have named Chris Voth, Ryan Munt and Konrad Korkowski co-captains, while the women have named Ashley Voth and Amy Toews as their co-captains.

Chris Voth enters his third season with the Bisons and holds on with 202 kills, second in points and sixth in overall blocks in 2009-10. Munt is entering his fouth season with the Herd, claiming 188 digs and ranking third in assists last season. Korkowski is a third-year veteran after being a red shirt last season, last playing for the Bisons in 2007-08 with 31 kills and 17 digs.

Head coach Garth Pischke returns for his 30th year at the men’s helm.

On the woman’s front, veteran Ashley Voth returns for her fifth and final season with the Bisons, earning her fifth consecutive selection to the Team Canada Senior’s Team in 2010. She was also named as CIS First Team All-Canadian and Canada West First All-Star. Last season, Voth led with 206 kills, second with 188 digs, and tied for second with 57 overall blocks.

Amy Toews is also entering her fifth and final season with the Brown and Gold, winning a silver medal at the 2010 CIS National Championship and ranking first in the conference with 63 blocks in 2009-10.

Head coach Ken Bentley returns for his 25th year with the women.

The women start things off at 6 p.m., with the men following at 7:30 p.m. Both games are at the U of W’s Duckworth Centre against the Wesmen.

Meanwhile, the Manitoba Bisons football team plays their last game of the season by hosting the UBC Thunderbirds at University Stating at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
