Two Winnipeg Blue Bomber rookies received two-year contract extensions Thursday morning.

The football club announced defensive back Deon Beasley and linebacker Marcellus Bowman have inked extensions with the team.

Beasley originally signed with the Bombers on July 12 and has so far racked up 22 tackles, one fumble recovery and two interceptions. The Texas native is also the Bombers’ primary kick returner and has returned 24 kickoffs for 511 yards for an impressive 21.3-yard average this season.

Bowman has been with the Big Blue since the start of training camp and has been a “dominant force” as linebacker, despite missing four games due to injury early in the year. The 24-year old has made 45 tackles, two sacks, one interception and eight special teams tackles.

“We’re thrilled to lock down defensive players of Marcellus and Deon’s caliber,” said vice-president and GM Joe Mack in a release. “They have both come in and proven they can compete at a high level in this league and we’re excited for them to continue that for years to come.”

The Bombers also announced Thursday that defensive back LaVar Glover is being honoured with the Cal Murphy ‘Heart of a Legend’ Award. The award goes to the Blue Bomber player who best demonstrates outstanding sportsmanship and dedication to the CFL and community and is voted on by the players.
