Alcohol Blamed in Fatal Selkirk Crash

Alcohol is being blamed in a crash early Thursday morning that claimed the life of a 28-year-old woman.

RCMP say at about 6:30 a.m. two vehicles collided at the controlled intersection of Vaughan Avenue and Mercy Street in Selkirk.

The woman’s 1999 Volkswagen and a 1999 Dodge Dakota pickup driven by a 22-year-old man collided.

The woman had to be extricated from her vehicle and was taken to hospital where she was pronounced deceased.

The St. Andrews man driving the pickup was uninjured and charges are pending against him.

Police continue to investigate.

UPDATE: Friday, Nov. 19 — RCMP have charged 22-year-old Sean Nicholas Messner with impaired driving causing death. He was released from custody and will appear in Selkirk court on January 21, 2011. The victim has been identified as Andrea Bannish.
