A fire early Saturday morning ripped through a home in the RM of La Broquerie, sending a father and son to hospital in critical condition.

The blaze broke out at around 5:40 a.m. on Hazelwood Drive, where a family of six attempted to escape.

Steinbach RCMP say three children along with their mother made it out safely without injuries. A 13-year-old boy had to be rescued from the basement by his father, but both sustained injuries.

The fire does not appear to be suspicious, but RCMP and the Office of the Fire Commissioner continue to investigate.

UPDATE: Sunday, Nov. 21 — 36-year-old Jacob Merkel has succumbed to his injuries. His 13-year-old son remains in critical condition.
