Academy Road BIZ Seeking Photos, History of Street

November 30, 2010 7:23 AM | News

The Academy Road BIZ is calling on residents who may have photos and information about the history of Academy Road.

The new sitting plaza at the corner of Academy Road and Wellington Crescent South features a stone cairn which will include four interpretive panels. The panels will be installed in early 2011 and tell the history of the Uptown Theatre (now Academy Uptown Lanes), The Julia Clark School, Academy Road Service and St. Mary’s Academy, for which Academy Road was named.

Other projects are in the works, including more historica panels with a goal of telling the history behind the neighbourhood.

In addition to historical buildings, topics will include famous neighborhood houses, famous people associated with the neighborhood, and the streetcars which used to operate on Academy Road.

Anyone with photos or stories to share is asked to e-mail info@academyroadbiz.com.
