The Winnipeg Goldeyes have signed catcher Luis Alen to the team’s 2011 roster.
Alen, 25, was signed to an American Association contract Friday, coming off a season with the Goldeyes that saw him hit .290 with a career-high 11 home runs and 56 RBI in 94 games.
“In my opinion Luis is the best dual threat player from the catching position in our league,” said manager Rick Forney.
Alen played 41 games at first base and finished the season with a .996 fielding percentage at that position. Forney expects to use him in both roles next season.
The Venezuela native started out in 2003 with the Florida Marlins rookie team in the Gulf Coast League until 2005, until playing in Italy with Parma in 2006.
