Proposed changes to the way cell phone contracts affect Manitobans were introduced on Wednesday.

The provincial government is looking at amending the Consumer Protection Act to promote fair and clear cell phone and texting contracts, and wants input from the public.

The number of complaints to the Consumer Protection Office over mobile contracts have been growing, and legislation to address this issue is intended to be introduced in the spring of 2011.

Some amendments include making contracts easy to read and understand, ensuring fairness for both consumers and suppliers, making information about contract cancellations clear, and providing clearer information on when contract terms can be changed.

Written submissions and comments on cell phone contract changes are being accepted until January 17, 2011 to consumers@gov.mb.ca, or by writing to the Consumer Protection Office, Manitoba Family Services and Consumer Affairs, 302-258 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3C 0B6.
