A survey published in late November found 59% of Canadians use social networking websites, such as Facebook and Twitter. When broken down locally, that number jumps astronomically when examining just Facebook alone.

Winnipeg marketer and blogger Erica Glasier recently collected her own data to find out how many Winnipeggers use either of the two most popular social websites. She found 70.2% of those living in Winnipeg belong to Facebook, while only 1.1% are on Twitter. However, the latter number was gathered based on users identifying their location in their profiles, so it’s likely a bit higher than reported.

If you look at the national numbers, 6,759 Winnipeggers on Twitter is actually higher than the Canadian average of 0.88%. Glasier says she expects the amount of users on Twitter to blow up locally in the next one to two years.
