A local citizens on patrol group is being credited with reporting several youths who were attempting to detonate a homemade explosive device in Grunthal.

RCMP were called to the Grunthal Fair Grounds on December 17 at about 11 p.m.

The youths fled the scene, but left the device behind, where the Explosive Disposal Unit was brought in to examine it.

The scene was contained and a 16-year-old boy was arrested and faces criminal charges. He will appear in St. Pierre Jolys court in February.

RCMP safely detonated the device, and describe it as a homemade incendiary-type bomb containing a black powdery substance with small containers of starting fluid and propane cylinders attached to it.

Several suspects were also arrested and interviewed. Police expect more arrests to follow.

Grunthal is roughly 70 km southeast of Winnipeg.
