Traffic Light Outage Causes Congestion on McPhillips

January 3, 2011 7:20 AM | News

Traffic on McPhillips Street was chaotic Sunday afternoon after a pickup truck knocked down a light standard and fled.

The accident happened just after 4 p.m., causing traffic lights at McPhillips and Inkster Boulevard to flash red in all directions.

Three southbound lanes were affected, where the downed pole sat blocking traffic.

Witnesses say numerous calls to 311 didn’t remedy the issue, making for a 90-minute traffic disruption before repair crews arrived on scene.

To add to the madness, a Winnipeg police cruiser on its way to a gun call got tied up in the mess. You’ll notice the compact car in the video that fails to make way for emergency personnel.
