Assiniboia Downs (HANDOUT)
Instead of having its race track sit empty during the offseason, Assiniboia Downs is putting it to good use.
Beginning Saturday, the Downs will open up its track to walkers looking to get some exercise during winter.
“Everyone these days is talking about declining fitness,” said Downs’ track announcer and CEO Darren Dunn. “We thought we’d do our little bit to combine exercise with a fun aspect. No one will even notice the energy they are putting into their walk when they’re imagining some of the top races that took place over the very surface they are walking.”
Dunn will lead the inaugural walk this Saturday at 10 a.m. Everyone who joins in will receive a free bowl of soup and a sandwich for lunch.
The track is 13/16th mile in circumference, just over 3/4 of a mile, and participants can go at whatever speed they want.
