Walmart Canada has plans to open 40 supercentres in the country within the next fiscal year, including several in Manitoba.

The American retailer said Wednesday it will expand, remodel and relocate existing stores between February 1, 2011 and January 31, 2012.

The supercentres are expected to generate more than 9,200 store and construction jobs. Specific store locations will be announced over the coming months.

Walmart says it will launch the supercentre program in Manitoba and Quebec in 2011, followed by Alberta, British Columbia and Saskatchewan.

The supercentre concept combines general merchandise and a larger grocery variety under one roof.

A company spokesperson said three Winnipeg Walmarts will be expanded in the near future, including the St. Mary’s Road, Ellice Avenue and Portage Avenue locations.

Walmart currently has 323 stores in the country, including 119 supercentres. It opened its first supercentre in Ontario in 2006.
