Nominations for the fifth annual Manitoba Long Service Fisher Awards opened Monday, honouring commercial fishers who have 50 or more years of industry involvement.

Manitoba Water Stewardship says the province’s $50 million commercial fishing industry includes more than 3,000 commercially licensed fishers and their employees.

The awards will be presented in co-operation with the Manitoba Commercial Inland Fishers Federation. Five Manitobans took home awards in 2010.

Nomination forms can obtained at www.gov.mb.ca/waterstewardship or by contacting Manitoba Water Stewardship at (204) 945-6640.

Nominations will be accepted until Friday, March 4, 2011.

The province also announced Manitoba’s first Winter Family Fishing Weekend — to be held February 19 to 21 over the Louis Riel long weekend.
