Two Gull Lake residents are facing charges of animal cruelty following an investigation going back to July.

The Office of the Chief Veterinary Officer says Peter and Judith Chernecki face 19 charges under the Animal Care Act after animal protection officers seized 64 dogs deemed to be in distress on July 16 and 17, 2010.

The animals were seized from the couple’s property, which officials say were confined to an area with unsanitary conditions and inadequate space and ventilation. The dogs also did not have adequate opportunities for exercise.

The Cherneckis will appear in Winnipeg court on March 3.

Many of the seized dogs ended up arriving at the Winnipeg Humane Society, while others were sent to a rescue in the U.S. to appear on the TV show “DogTown.”
