Eighteen street banners celebrating the Year of the Hare will be raised in Chinatown today.
The banners are part of the Downtown BIZ’s annual Chinatown Banner Competition and will feature the winning design by Red River College student Heather Zimmerman.
The second year Graphic Design student will receive a $400 honorarium, with an additional $400 going to the Creative Arts second year Graphic Design Open House.
Zimmerman’s banner will be unveiled at the Kum Koon Garden banquet tonight at 8:30 p.m.
The jury selected the design because it was original and eye-catching. The banner captures the refinement, sophistication and calm demeanour of the Hare. It incorporates elements of traditional Chinese art through the use of paper cuts while presenting a fresh, contemporary look.
All banner submissions will be on display in the skywalk in Portage Place outside of Manitoba Hydro Place’s skywalk entrance from February 11 to March 31.
