Import defensive back Jonathan Hefney was re-signed to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers Tuesday, hours before he was scheduled to become a free agent.

The 26-year-old South Carolina native was the East division’s Most Outstanding Rookie in 2009 after starting every game at halfback and recording 66 tackles and four interceptions.

Hefney returned to Winnipeg late last season and started the final five games of the year recording 25 tackles and two interceptions after trying out for the Detroit Lions, where he spent two weeks on the NFL’s practice roster.

“I’m glad I was able to get this deal done. This organization supported me when I tried out for the NFL and I’m looking forward to being able to return to Winnipeg for a full season and build off what we were able to do last year,” Hefney said in a statement.

The Bombers also signed non-import defensive end Shawn Mayne on Tuesday.
