March is Kidney Health Month

Tomorrow kicks off Kidney Health Month across the country, where Canadians are encouraged to help raise awareness and increase prevention of kidney disease.

The number of Canadians living with kidney disease has tripled over the last 20 years, accounting for 20 percent more Manitobans on dialysis than in 2008.

According to the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority, 25 percent of Manitobans who start dialysis will die within the first year.

If you are at high risk to develop kidney disease — high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease or family history of kidney problems — simple tests can be done to measure your kidney function.
