While most print publications are folding, another is breaking into two more Canadian markets.

Metro Canada will begin publishing in Winnipeg and London, Ontario on April 4, focusing on “youthful, active metropolitan residents.”

The daily papers will be distributed in street boxes, rising to a total daily circulation of 40,000 copies in Winnipeg.

Metro Winnipeg will be a joint venture between Metro International S.A. and Torstar Corporation. The former publisher of Metro Alberta, Steve Shrout, has been appointed as publisher for Metro Winnipeg.

“We look forward to offering a fresh urban news perspective in one of Canada’s most vibrant Prairie communities,” Shrout said in a release.

Besides its print product, Metro Canada also runs accompanying news websites in each of its markets.

Metro publishes in 100 major cities, including Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Halifax.
