Winnipeg Transit riders will have a new way of identifying and boarding the correct bus after an automated voice system was installed.

The External Route Destination Announcement (ERDA) system is currently in 170 of 545 buses and provides a female voice announcing the bus route number and destination on an external speaker.

The system is meant to make it easier for riders to identify and board the correct bus. The announcement is activated only when the doors of the bus open.

An example of the information provided would be, “Route 14 to South St. Vital via Paddington.”

All buses purchased since 2008 have external speakers capable of providing ERDA announcements, which will activate at all 5,000 bus stops in the city.
