The Manitoba Children’s Museum received an $800,000 gift on Friday to construct a new welcome centre.

Winnipeg philanthropists John and Bonnie Buhler announced the donation at a news conference, which will help shape the Buhler Welcome Centre at The Forks.

It’s the largest private-sector gift in the museum’s 25-year history.

The Children’s Museum is currently closed for construction and will re-open June 4, 2011. Museums officials also shared details on the progress of the construction already taking place as part of a $10-million project revealed just over a year ago.

Updated at 12:10 p.m. with details of the announcement.
