City Preparing Thousands of Sandbags for Flood Fight

March 9, 2011 3:24 PM | News

The City of Winnipeg is preparing to battle high water levels this spring by filling thousands of sandbags earlier than normal.

Watch:

Three sandbag-making machines are working feverishly to protect homeowners, and more than 350,000 sandbags will have been made by the end of Wednesday. A fourth machine will begin producing sandbags in the coming days.

The city has also added a night shift at two of its Public Works yards to assist in the production.

The bags are being stored in heated facilities to be distributed later this month to properties at risk of spring flooding.
