A new Legal Help Centre was opened Wednesday in the lower level of the MacNamara North Building at 380 Spence Street.
The joint initiative between the University of Winnipeg and the University of Manitoba will provide legal information and resources, a drop-in and referral service as well as community workshops addressing specific legal issues.
The centre will be staffed by students from the U of W’s Global College and Criminal Justice Department and from the U of M’s faculties of Social Work and Law. Students will be under the supervision and direction of volunteer lawyers.
The centre’s drop-in service hours will be Tuesdays and Fridays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Volunteer lawyers will provide free legal advice to anyone with a total household income under $50,000 per year.
