The Manitoba Bison football team recruited six local high school players on Thursday, stacking the roster for the 2011 season.

The Bisons recruited Oak Park High School’s running back Nic Demski, quarterback John Kiesman and offensive lineman Shahpour Birjandian, plus West Kildonan Collegiate offensive lineman Mitch MacKay, Grant Park High School defensive lineman Eric Dasset and St. Paul’s High School offensive lineman Kieran Beveridge.

Demski appears to be a front-runner to start, but head coach Brian Dobie hasn’t officially decided who will get the honour just yet.

The 17-year-old is also a hockey player with the Oak Park Raiders and won Thursday night’s 2011 Milk AAAA Provincial High School Hockey Championship over the St. Paul’s Crusaders.

Asked if he plans on trying out for the Bisons hockey team in the off season, Demski noted he hadn’t yet spoken to hockey coach Mike Sirant about the possibility. “I might,” Demski joked.
