Precipitation received over the weekend has forced the City of Winnipeg to begin building sandbag dikes this week.
Low-lying properties along the Red and Assiniboine Rivers will start receiving sandbags on Wednesday. About 100 property owners will receive notice that they must build their dikes by the end of the weekend.
As of today, the Red River is at 4.3 metres (14 feet) at James Avenue. Provincial flood officials predict the crest will hit Emerson between April 29 and May 5, and between April 14 and 21 in Fargo, ND. It takes about three weeks for the crest to get from Fargo to Winnipeg.
Any residents wanting to volunteer their time to help sandbag properties in the city are asked to call 311. Volunteer efforts could begin as early as Wednesday.
