U of M Bisons Unveil ‘Athlete Walkway of Honour’

April 13, 2011 12:57 PM | Sports

It’s the first of its kind in North America and a way for the University of Manitoba to honour its former athletes.

The Bison Athlete Walkway of Honour was announced Wednesday and will be displayed outside of the Investors Group Athletic Centre on the U of M’s Fort Garry campus to be a way for student athletes to leave their mark. The names of former athletes will be placed on to a 5×7″ plaque, along with their sport number, position and years played. The recognition will be on a display tower sitting about seven feet tall.

The walkway will be set up by the fall of 2011 and serves to recognize an athlete’s commitment to the university, provide a legacy for future athletes, improve the Bison Athletics brand and create an opportunity for alumni to get to know present student athletes.

“This project is a huge step forward in establishing the brand and tradition of Bison Sport in a classy visual display on the U of M campus,” said Rick Suffield, project coordinator.

Beginning June 30, former student athletes from any sport can send in their form to purchase a spot on the Walkway. A one-time payment of $750 will be required, or students can pay in installments from $21 a month. Contributors can visit umanitoba.ca/bisonwalkway for further details.

There will be an ongoing campaign to add new Bison alumni after their graduating year starting with the end of the 2011-12 season.
