Downtown Winnipeg will be cleaned up today as part of an Earth Day initiative put on by the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ.
More than 300 business and community members will clean up three locations from Higgins Avenue and Main Street south to Assiniboine Avenue.
Because Earth Day falls on Good Friday, the world is celebrating it a day earlier.
Cleanup crews will start in the North End at 9 a.m., moving to Portage Avenue by 2 p.m. and then south on Broadway (near Subway).
“I think it’s safe to say Winnipeggers are more than ready to welcome spring,” said Stefano Grande, Downtown BIZ executive director. “This is a great way for the community to come together to get rid of the litter that was buried under the snow this winter.”
Anyone can participate in the cleanup by joining BIZ staff on site. Cleaning supplies will be provided, along with a T-shirt and coffee and donuts from Tim Hortons. Those who take part have the chance to win one of three mountain bikes.
