A two-vehicle crash on Highway 1 Wednesday killed an elderly man near Portage la Prairie.

RCMP say a semi truck hauling cattle was involved in a collision with a Chevrolet Equinox at about 2:15 p.m. approximately five kilometres east of Portage.

The crash happened at the junction of Highway 1 and Road 27W.

The driver and passenger in the semi were uninjured, while the driver of the Equinox was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Police believe the semi was travelling westbound on Highway 1 at the time when it collided with the other vehicle who was on Road 27W.

No cattle were hurt in the crash.

The investigation is continuing, and police say alcohol is not believed to be a factor.

UPDATE: Thursday, April 28 — The driver has been identified as a 77-year-old Portage la Prairie man. His name isn’t being released.
