More than 450 motorcycle riders will hit the road this morning for the 2011 Manitoba Motorcycle Ride for Dad.

The annual fundraiser raises money for prostate cancer research and education.

The first leg of the ride begins at 10 a.m. from the Polo Park Shopping Centre south parking lot next to Earls, and will travel to Assiniboia Downs led by a police escort. From there, riders will make their way to Gimli, before returning to the city for a wind-up event at Cowboys, Canad Inns Windsor Park at 2:30 p.m.

Celebrity ride captains include St. Boniface MP Shelly Glover, Winnipeg police Chief Keith McCaskill, Winnipeg Blue Bomber Doug Brown, and others.

“We hope to surpass last year’s total proceeds of $92,000,” said Ed Johner, event spokesperson and prostate cancer survivor. “All funds stay in Manitoba and a heartfelt thanks to all the riders, donors and sponsors who provide us with the opportunity to participate in such a great event.”
