The University of Manitoba interrupted its spring convocation Tuesday, but it wasn’t in vain.

About halfway through the procession of graduates, U of M president David Barnard stopped the ceremony to share some NHL-related news.

Barnard held up a Winnipeg Jets baseball cap, as loud cheers and chants began filling the Investors Group Athletic Centre with, “Go, Jets, Go!”

News of the announcement made by True North Sports and Entertainment was widespread in no time.

“This truly is a time of exciting and promising new beginnings,” Barnard said. “There is much to celebrate this week, especially for hockey fans. You have been waiting for this announcement for the better part of two decades.”
