Leafs’ Goaltender to Throw Opening Pitch at Goldeyes Game

July 13, 2011 3:38 PM | Sports

Winnipeg Goldeyes fans to Shaw Park will see an unlikely athlete throw out the opening pitch on Friday.

Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender James Reimer will be on the mound to open the game against the visiting Sioux Falls Pheasants.

“James’ story is one of hard work and perseverance,” Goldeyes GM Andrew Collier said in a release. “In three seasons he worked his way up from the ECHL to playing on Hockey Night in Canada every Saturday night. The Goldeyes organization wants to recognize his accomplishments on Friday.”

Reimer will also sign autographs for fans during the first inning of the game. The Morweena native played his minor hockey in the Interlake region of Manitoba and suited up in the Interlake Lightning Midget AAA program before having a three-year career in the Western Hockey League with the Red Deer Rebels.

Game time is 7 p.m.

The Fish return home Thursday for the first of four games against Sioux Falls after an eight-game road trip.
