A record number of teams will have their feet in the sand this afternoon when the 10th annual Super-Spike volleyball tournament begins.

This year, 278 teams will be competing for volleyball supremacy at Maple Grove Rugby Park near the South Perimeter Highway. Dubbed Manitoba’s largest outdoor beach volleyball tournament, the weekend will include a concert series with such acts as Inward Eye, The Trews, Retro Rhythm Review, Papa Mambo, Stamina and Jah Vibes, Stone Throw Second, Radio Electric, Black Out City Kids and Sons of York.

More than $75,000 is expected to be raised during the two-day event for Team Canada — the volleyball program’s largest annual fundraiser.

Gates open at 5:30 p.m. today with games beginning at 6:30 p.m.

DJ Dow Jones will close out the weekend with the Red Bull Beach Party.

The public can buy weekend passes to watch the action for $25 at TicketWeb.ca or at SuperSpike.ca.
