A mason instructor at Stony Mountain Institution has been charged with smuggling drugs into the prison.

RCMP say prison officials reported the employee on July 26. Police searched the man’s car and seized cash, pills, marijuana, ecstasy and what appeared to be crystal meth.

Fifty-seven-year-old John Wallace Lightfoot of Stony Mountain was arrested the same day, later being released on a promise to appear in Stonewall court on September 19.

On Thursday, Lightfoot was officially charged with four counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking. RCMP believe he received money to smuggle the items into the institution.

The value of the items seized is estimated at $52,000.

The investigation is ongoing.
