An 18-year-old man from Cross Lake First Nation drowned Sunday morning following a social in Norway House.

RCMP say at about 2 a.m. a social was letting out at the Fort Island Arena when officers spotted the man swimming in the Nelson River.

Police made contact with the man, but lost sight of him after he began swimming back to shore.

The man was eventually found about 50 feet from shore and towed back. RCMP performed CPR until an ambulance arrived.

He was taken to the Norway House Hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.

Alcohol is considered a contributing factor.
