Local Fundraiser Planned for African Famine Relief

A Winnipeg university student is attempting to raise $10,000 to fund famine relief in Africa.

Kelly Malbasa has organized Beats for Relief on September 8 — a fundraiser on behalf of the Canadian Red Cross’ Horn of Africa Drought fund.

After seeing the situation in Africa on the news, Malbasa was inspired to do her part and collect donations. As an individual, any donations brought in will be matched by the Canadian government.

“I quickly donated $50 to Oxfam,” Malbasa said. ” I felt like I was only throwing a penny to the cause. So instead of throwing a penny, I concluded what better way to give more money by throwing a fun party for a great cause.”

The event at Rock Bar (1931 Pembina Highway) will include local DJs Tim Waters, Joe Silva and Dow Jones. Steve Adams from Hot 103 will emcee the night, which also includes a silent auction, prizes including an acoustic guitar, and a chance to win Pearl Jam and Kings of Leon tickets

“We are still looking for more unique contributions to our silent auction,” Malbasa added.

Tickets are $10 in advance or $15 at the door. To purchase tickets or for more information, call (204) 293-8640 or visit the Facebook page.
