Manitoba’s Liberal Party has a plan to extend the city’s rapid transit line within four years.

Leader Jon Gerrard announced Wednesday his government would put down $44 million annually to extend the line beyond 3.7 kilometeres from Queen Elizabeth Way to Jubilee Avenue.

The plan would eventually see rapid transit extend all the way to the University of Manitoba and new stadium site.

Gerrard says the extension could also spur the development of affordable housing near permanent rapid transit stations, helping with the city’s low vacancy rates.

The Liberals would consult with the City of Winnipeg on which mode of rapid transit to build, while seeking financial backing from the federal government.
