The United Way’s 2011 campaign will kickoff today with the annual Plane Pull at Red River College’s Stevenson Campus.

More than 1,300 people divided into several teams will assemble to attempt to pull a 727 or DC10 across the tarmac the fastest. Teams will also be judged on spirit, enthusiasm and unique attire.

The eighth annual event will reveal the fundraising goal this year and demonstrate teamwork and community involvement.

Hot 103’s Ace Burpee and Chrissy Troy will be emcees, and Danny’s Whole Hog will be serving up a free BBQ lunch.

The formal program and goal announcement will take place at 11 a.m., with the Plane Pull and lunch to follow from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

UPDATE: This year’s goal is $19,723,899 — about $1 million more than the United Way’s 2010 goal.
